THE community of Ratongor in the Livuan Reimber LLG area of Gazelle was buzzing as it opened its new elementary school building and performed ground breaking for work to begin on a new library for its primary school last Friday.
Ratongor, situated in the north coast of Rabaul, was glad to have the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and ENB Regional MP Sir Leo Dion, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Development and Gazelle MP Malakai Tabar and managing director of Tropicana Sandra Lau.
Work on the new library would be funded by Lau, who is known by locals as “Mama Sandra” for her assistance in improving health and education infrastructure.
Sir Leo acknowledged Lau, saying she was a generous partner, especially in education development.
He paid tribute to past leaders for their foresight in establishing the primary school which has produced students that have become someone in their services to the community and government.
Sir Leo commended the initiative by the community to build the elementary classroom building, saying the trend must be continued in the province.
“Students, it is your right to be educated,” he said.
“The world is developing. We need to keep up with it to produce scientists, pilots and teachers.”
Sir Leo said the free education policy created two million positions for children that would normally not be able to get basic education or be educated. “It is a challenge to the provincial government, district development authority and parents to ensure we provide facilities, including teachers, for children in all schools so that will improve learning,” he said. Sir Leo said teachers were public servants and should continue to provide services that they were being paid  for.
He pledged K50,000 for the new library for the primary school while Tabar  committed K10,000 for the library project.
Fundraising for the school project also started on Saturday and will end tomorrow afternoon.
