TEACHERS’ housing in one school in Eastern Highlands is being addressed following the opening of a new residential duplex on Friday.
Teachers, students, parents and members of the community turned up in numbers to witness the opening of the building at Mando Primary School in Lower Asaro local level government in Daulo.
The building was funded by the Daulo district development authority (DDA) at a cost of K100,000.
It was constructed by local contractor, Wemoho Civil Works, which took six weeks to complete.
Eastern Highlands Governor Peter Numu said education was the gateway to a good life.
“Everything rises and falls on education,” he said.
“Politics, business and all other things depend on education.”
Numu said Eastern Highlands needed well-educated citizens to develop the province in the future.
He thanked the Daulo DDA for realising the importance of education and investing in it.
“From my PSIP (provincial services improvement programme) funds, I am now committing K50,000 to counter-fund development in this school,” Numu said.
He said his government had also set aside K3 million to assist in paying tuition fees for all Eastern Highlands students attending tertiary institutions.
Daulo MP Pogio Ghate challenged parents to take pride and responsibility in their children’s education and not depend too much on Government to pay their children’s school fees.
“The children are your own flesh and blood so you have to take some responsibility in educating them,” he said. “You have to also look after the infrastructure built for you to use.”
Ghate said Daulo DDA allocated K1 million this year to pay tuition fees for all students from the district attending recognised tertiary institutions around the country.
