A SCHOOL in Port Moresby yesterday received two water tanks, a hand-washing station and an eight-meter deep bore-hole to mark World Water Day.
Students and teachers of the Pari Elementary School at Pari village, Moresby South were relieved.
Head teacher Vagi Oru said it was the first time in 15 years for the school to witness a project launching.
“Our school had no water supply for 15 years since it was opened,” he said.
“So we are grateful to the donors.
“The water supply installed will help students become engaged in hygienic practices.”
He hopes that the school will also be assisted in the renovation of the ablution blocks, erecting fencing and building new classrooms.
International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) launched the event in partnership with the Department of Education and the Anis Foundation.
Unicef deputy country representative Vikas Singh said it was an opportunity to learn about addressing safe water supplies.
Anis Foundation chief executive officer Robert Kombil said it was the first bore-hole water project in the city.
“We have not tested the water yet, so it’s only for hand-washing,” he said.
