WINGEI Junior High school in Yangoru-Saussia, East Sepik, has encouraged religious education (RE) at the school which is conducted every Monday, an official says.
School principal David Emos said they run RE programmes because religion serves several functions of life.
“It gives meaning and purpose to life, reinforces social unity and stability, serves as an agent of social control, promotes psychological and physical wellbeing and motivate students to work for positive social change in their communities.
“Additional benefit of putting God first is being able to fulfil the second greatest commandment – loving others as we love ourselves, Mathew 222:39,” Emos explained.
Emos said they allowed RE because they wanted the students to grow and live in godly manner that would build society in godly ways as well.
“If we hold God first in our lives, we are more likely to choose over self in our interactions with others,” he said.
“Without acknowledging God’s love for humanity, we will not be able to thoroughly appreciate our neighbours.”
He said RE provides opportunities to promote spiritual development through discussing and reflecting on key questions on the meaning of truth.
He said the vision of the school is putting God first.
“Normally, we have RE classes every Monday for students from Grade seven to Grade 10,’’ he said.
