A TEAM from the Health Department has been conducting hygiene promotion and awareness on coronavirus in schools around Port Moresby.
The awareness programme was conducted for a week by the school health promotion branch under the department’s public health division.
The team visit a number of schools in the different electorates.
The main aim of the awareness is to ensure students learn how to practice proper hygiene methods that can help them to prevent the spread of the dreaded virus.
Technical officer Glenda Suagu, who was responsible for organising the awareness programme, said the promotion was a good way to help the students tell others about the preventive measures of coronavirus.
“Students must listen carefully so that when they go home, they can tell their families and friends so a lot of people are made aware
of this current health issue,” she said.
The students were informed about the virus and its symptoms, how it spread, ways that they could contract it and preventative action to be taken against it.
Schools were given posters while health pamphlets were given to the health teachers to incorporate in their future lessons.
Apex Andia, a health teacher, expressed his gratitude to the team for making the effort to visit his school.
“The awareness is very helpful to us and we are very grateful for the health team for choosing our school to inform the students and teachers about this current health issue.”
The health team started their awareness last Monday with schools in the North East electorate and ended on Friday at St John’s Primary School in Tokarara.
