THE Buang High School in Bulolo, Morobe, is still in need of a science laboratory, library, a kitchen, ablution blocks and additional classrooms to accommodate needs.
Bulolo MP Sam Basil initiated the school and opened it in 2016 with Grade 10 students who are expected to graduate this year.
It was established on Mt Gowoongk near Wagau and Bugiyau using district improvement services (DSIP) funding.
Principal Andrew Anduari said the school needed a science laboratory with equipment and books, additional teachers houses, kitchen and ablution blocks.
“Four teacher’s reside off campus in Wagau and Bugiyau villages respectively and the school pays K300 rental per teacher each month, similarly to 40 students who cost between K400 and K500 monthly rental determined by size of the house,” he said.
“They scale up and down Mt Gowoongk to attend classes each day.”
The school has only three teachers houses, a girls’ dormitory, two double and one single classrooms and water supply without an administration office.
The boys’ dormitory (for 80) is incomplete.
School board chairman Siliwana Tagit embraced the initiative by Basil and took ownership to secure K180,000 from a donor agency to build additional four-in-one double classrooms.
Anduari acknowledged Tagit for securing the funding through Morobe project coordinator Bradley Wopai.
The ground breaking was held on Saturday.
“We cannot expect Basil alone to shoulder our burden, the community must embrace the projects Basil initiates,” Tagit said.
Wopai said the funding source will cater for Buang High School (K180,000), Tent Siti and St Patrick Primary Schools (K200,000) each in Lae.
