ONLY three-quarters of the students at Jubilee Catholic Secondary School in Port Moresby attended the first day of the second term yesterday because worried parents pulled out the rest, their principal said.
Principal Barbara Miles told The National that a quarter of the students were absent because parents had intervened to prevent their children contracting the Covid-19 that was ravaging Port Moresby and PNG.
Miles said social distancing was a challenge but the school administration was trying its best to follow Covid-19 protocols.
She said during the month-long break, teachers sent activities and exercises via Whatsapp and email to students to cover lessons missed during the isolation period.
Miles said those who did not have a smart phone were told to collect hard copies at the school.
“In regards to Covid-19 protocols, students have been encouraged to wear masks when they leave their homes, they don’t enter the school without masks,” she said.
“Besides masks, we have hand-wash basins around the school for the students to use.
“We cannot continue to buy masks for the students.”
