WHILE most schools around the country are winding down assessment, preparing report cards and looking forward to graduation, such is not the case for Rumginai Primary School in Western.
The school, in Kiunga rural local level government, North Fly, has started to prepare for the 2021 school year as it looks to implement the standards based curriculum (SBC) and focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) subjects in line with government policy.
The teachers discuss these issues at weekly in-service training on Fridays.
In-service facilitator Elias Wranga said the teachers spent half a day for the training.
Wranga said the 2020 school year had been challenging with the Covid-19 pandemic causing schools to close for periods during the year.
He said as such it was important for schools to assess the impact on their lessons and grades and make up for it the following year.
He said the workshop started in September and would continue for the remaining weeks of the 2020 school year.
“Today’s workshop was on SBC mathematics content, pedagogy, projects and assessment,” Wranga said.
“I was engaged by the school board and teachers to conduct SBC and Stem training.
“I am happy with the enthusiasm of the school board and the teachers to partner and share skills.”
