WITH the Government stopping the celebration of provincial days, a newly-established school in Lae’s Eriku suburb quietly observed New Ireland Day last Monday.
The Reggiana International Academy observed the day with cake cutting and a dance performance by the B13 dance troupe.
The institution’s motto is “A school with a difference” and most of teachers are former International Education Agency staff.
School director Vanessa Pelgen said they started the institution in February with 36 students but the number had doubled.
The institution teaches international and Papua New Guinea curriculum.
“With our Government not allowing provincial days and today (Monday) being New Ireland Day, we thought we’d bring it to the school and teach our kids culture,” she said.
School principal Cecelia Gregory told The National that with the theme “Communication” for this term, the school decided to incorporate New Ireland Day as students were taught about cultures and traditions.
Gregory said the school was focused on taking talented students and students with special needs and providing a learning environment that would see them learn and grow.
She said the school had classes such as dance that taught students to express themselves and help them be more confident.
She said the school also taught children with special needs.
