School using savings to improve infrastructure

MOST schools depend on the Government and donors for infrastructure development that is so vital in achieving academic performance for their students, Mt Hagen Tee Primary School head teacher John Omben Maiya says.
“Only with good infrastructure can quality learning be achieved because the morale of teachers and students will be boosted,” he said.
Maiya said his school had saved some K70,000 from its annual budgets to fund the school’s infrastructure development and maintenance programmes.
“We will be putting up a new fencing and renovate run down facilities to help lift our image,” he said.
“K40,000 will be spent on the fencing, K15,000 on toilet maintenance, K2,000 for reconnecting water supply, K15,000 for reconnecting electricity and K4,000 to set up a students’ representative council.
“The school is meeting the cost because nothing will happen if we keep dreaming and not make use with what we have at the moment.”
Maiya said the school was located in the heart of Mt Hagen and such maintenance and development for a better learning environment had been pending for a very long time.
“The costs may be high but education is a key priority for our students and teachers,” he said.
“Teachers need a better working place because they are the key people.”
