Schools fund teachers’ in-service programme

NINE secondary and 13 high schools in Chimbu have funded their own in-service for their teachers.
A total of 450 teachers attended a four-day training programme which started last Tuesday and ended on Friday at Muaina Secondary School in the Sinasina-Yongomugl.
The in-service programme was shelved for five years due to lack of funding from the provincial administration; the last training programme was held at Gumine Secondary School in 2014.
The 2019 in-service was staged from the contributions of participating schools.
Provincial education adviser Mathew Gelua commended the schools for funding the in-service.
“The schools are taking right steps for their teachers,” he said.
Gelua said teacher training was an important aspect of the education programme and would benefit students so funding needed to be made available for periodic in-services.
He said he would ensure teachers in the province were given the opportunity to attend training and even do further studies in order for them to provide the best service to schools.
He said next year on wards the teachers would receive a full week of in-service.
Other officers who attended the programme were provincial guidance officer Gabriel Kagl, senior standard officer Reynold Pinaga and senior provincial adviser Apakure Mogia.
Gelua thanked the schools for taking the initiative to educate their teachers to impart quality education. In-service organiser Samson Goiye said the teachers gained from the in-service by sharing information, methods and ideas on how to improve the delivery of education.
“Many new things that we learn will greatly help us to improve on our performances,” Goiye said.
Kondiu Rosary Secondary in Kerowagi will host next year’s in-service.
