ABOUT K5million has been distributed to elementary, primary, high and secondary schools and Technical Vocational Education Training institutes as school fee subsidies in Southern Highlands last week.
This was according to Governor William Powi yesterday when he announced the first payment out of an allocated K20.2 million agreed to by the provincial government to be paid as parental component of school fees this year.
Powi said from the K5 million:

  • 184 primary schools would get K1.8 million;
  • 15 high schools and seven secondary get K2.2 million;
  • 393 elementary schools get K594,813;
  • Technical Vocational Education Training – K205,000; and,
  • Flexible Open Distance Education get K170,000.

Powi urged the provincial education board to manage and run schools effectively.
He said he had taken stock of about 9,000 students from the province who had dropped out of formal education in the past four years and would help them at other higher learning institutions in the country.
“Students who had no placing after dropping out in 2016-2019, we (provincial government) have appropriated K20 million to sponsor them,” he said. “This is the second phase of supporting education.
“First 100 students (from the 9,000) we have made arrangement with an aviation school in Port Moresby. Thirty will take up pilot training, 30 for the aviation course and 40 will be sponsored for the aircraft maintenance course.”
