TWO schools in Sopu, ward four of the Tapini local level government (LLG) area in Goilala have received building material for classrooms and staff houses.
The two schools are Sopu and Lamanaipi community schools.
Sopu Community School headmaster Albert Dakai, on receiving the material on Monday, said the school had been run down for almost 29 years without any support, and thanked Goilala MP and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure William Samb and LLG deputy president John Keruv.
Dakai said staff houses and classrooms there were built with bush material, the roofs were regularly changed because of leakage during rainy seasons, there were also no proper housing for teachers, therefore, the iron sheets and cement bags would be used to fix classrooms and build new staff houses.
Keruv said towards the end of last year Samb gave K25 million to LLGs in the districts with instructions to utilise the money in projects. Keruv said with the geographical location and being the highest populated ward in the district, the funds were not sufficient for a project and decided to use the money to purchase materials for the two schools.
He said: “For me, as a ward councillor from Sopu, I see that the money given was not enough to be used for projects due to the geographical location so I decided to purchase materials for the two schools.
“My ward is the highest populated ward in the district, so whatever little resources that the minister has given, I have used it to purchase materials for staff housing and classrooms for the two schools.
“And we were fall short the government will come in and assist.”
Lamanaipi Community School vice-chairman Maita Lui receiving materials for the school, thanked the president for the initiative in supporting education at the ward level.
