Schools lack funds, says official

SOME schools in Morobe may have to be closed this term due to lack of operating funds, provincial acting education adviser Keith Tangui says.
“Government tuition fee subsidy for this term had yet to be received and the subsidy is not paid in full when it is due and sometimes it is delayed,” he said.
“That is why schools are unable operate effectively, affecting teaching and students’ education.”
Tangui said the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic had also increased administrative costs, in addition to the delay in subsidy funds this term and posed a huge burden on school administrations.
Despite being satisfied with the teaching and learning outcome for schools in Morobe, Tangui said he was worried about the ability of schools to complete the full term or the remainder of school year due to financial constraints.
“Parents and guardians are also responsible as they have been tasked to pay the parental support fee,” he said.
