BEING a dux is nothing new for Grade 12 student Flynndorin Waiin and his family after he received top awards in the science strand at Brandi Secondary School in Wewak, East Sepik, last Friday.
Waiin is a shy, young man, naturally bright and whose parents believed in him and knew he has a bright future ahead.
Principal John Tokmun congratulated the five Grade 12 classes for being the first to have sat for the two-week outcomes-based education (OBE) examinations.
He said with the implementation of OBE curriculum for the upper secondary subjects this year, the subjects had been grouped so that students would have the opportunity to apply to a number of pathways once they completed Grade 12.
He said some school principals might have blamed the OBE for the drop in the standard of spoken and written English but he disagreed.
Tokmun said English alone should not be used as the basis of the argument to prove that OBE was a failed curriculum.
He claimed the outcomes based education was an applicable approach that would broaden the students’ field of opportunities even if they did not do well in any particular subject.
He personally believes that the OBE curriculum is the right method at all levels.
He said schools and teachers should correct their approach of teaching subjects instead of removing something that had cost millions of kina to put in place.
Tokmun thanked all stakeholders of Brandi Secondary School for hosting the 2011 graduation ceremony.
