KAUGERE Seagulls say Sunday’s 18-0 shutout of Southern Sons has boosted their morale for the remainder of the Moresby South Rugby League competition at Moresby South Stadium.
Head coach Vicky Moses said: “We’ve returned to the competition this season after serving our three-year suspension.
“Despite the win, we still need to polish up our attacking and defence for the youngsters to understand the game better.”
Meanwhile, former Gulf Isou five-eighth Samson Pirika starred for Seagulls in the round-three fixture.
Pirika returned to the competition to help develop Seagulls after spending a decade (six years with Gulf Isapea and four with Isou) in the country’s premier rugby league competition, the Digicel Cup.
Pirika scored a four-pointer and set up tries to Amiel Joe and Ian Michael for a 12-0 lead in the first half.
Gege Pasa then made a 40m break and crossed over under the uprights to seal the win with a converted try. Pirika said after the match that it was good to be back in the side with an eye on developing the younger talents coming through the ranks at the club.
In the other results, Two-Mile Pearls ended Kaugere Bulldogs’ winning run with an 18-14 victory, Koki Eels forced a 6-6 draw with Joyce Bay Roosters, and reigning champions Taurama Wolfpack beat Kone Eagles 12-6.
The Hawks will be looking to go back in title contention this season.
