Secretary only official to approve student selection list: Kombra

National

THE Education secretary is the only person who will approve all selections and give authority to students to enroll for grade 11 in 2021 and not any principal, Department of Education personnel or provincial education officer.
This was the directive given to the department’s staff and principals of secondary schools and national high schools by secretary Dr Uke Kombra.
After the selections for grade 11 students, the final list would be signed by the secretary and sent to all schools, only then will the final selection lists be made public for students to enroll accordingly.
The examination papers for the grade 10 students have been marked and selections for grade 11 will commence from Nov 30-Dec 11.
The general education services division would coordinate the selection process with all principals of secondary schools and national high schools with assistance from the inspections and standards division and guidance and counselling division in the provinces.
Dr Kombra reminded principals and education officers that the grade 11 national selections was a national education board function under the secretary and not decentralised to the provinces.
He said the students selected would be from the eligible list who met the national standard requirements to pursue upper secondary education.
The requirements include seven upper passes and above in English, mathematics, science, social science, personal development, agriculture and business studies.
For the design and technology subjects – arts, design and technology, home economics, practical skills and computing, the requirement was to score credits or a percentile score of 77.0 points or more to be selected into year 11.
For national high schools, the selections will be done according to intentions expressed by students who scored distinctions and credits only.
Once the selections are approved by Dr Kombra, students can access their results and selection list online. The signed selection lists would be sent out to schools throughout the country.
