LEADERS must humble themselves and seek outside assistance to overcome serious problems affecting the country, Parliament was told on Tuesday.

Goroko MP Bire Kimisopa said this when referring to the enhanced cooperation programme (ECP) for police.

“We must not beat our chests too hard and not admit our problems,” he told members.

“We are seriously faced with a greater responsibility of law and order issue and seriously we need assistance. If it means to bring back ECP or taking advice from other countries then by all good means let us do so.

“Our society is faced with this law and order problem, much a greater need as it will affect our economic, social and political development for now and future if not seriously attended to.

“It is time we humble ourselves. Put our heads down and admit that yes we have a serious problem and we need help,” he said.

Kimisopa, a former police minister, said law and order issues could not be solved immediately but with continuous strategic efforts, including seeking assistance from outside.

He reiterated that when ECP was first implemented in PNG in 2002, there was a significant improvement in local police performance and discipline.

He and urged leaders and people to realise that seeking outside assistance was a good way to help resolve problems facing the country.
