Champion golfer Kristine Seko, pictured, will lead Team PNG as the country’s flag bearer in the opening of the 10th Pacific Mini Games at the Korman Stadium in Port Vila, Vanuatu, on Dec 4.
Seko was announced as the flag-bearer during the team’s farewell function in Port Moresby on Monday by Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee president and PNG Pacific Games Association Sir John Dawanincura. Seko said she was grateful for the recognition.
“I am very honoured and will proudly lead you with our flag,” she said.
Seko started playing golf at a young age, rising to become a leading competitor in the sport.
She had won numerous national events and stamped her mark in the region by winning two gold medals at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby — in individual and team events.
Seko’s achievements include winning the Morobe Open in 2014, 2015 and 2016; PNG Open in 2013, 2014 and 2015; the National Amateur Championships in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016; and the two gold medals at the 2015 Pacific Games.
Still competing in the amateur ranks, she aims to turn professional.
Seko is looking forward to the challenge in Vanuatu and hopes to return with great news for PNG.
The Pacific Mini Games will be held from Dec 4-15.
Team PNG’s advance party left Port Moresby on Tuesday.
The group led by general manager Anzillah Miro, went ahead to do final checks on the accommodation venues and logistics before the rest of the team arrive.
Chef de Mission Emma Waiwai said accommodation and transport were important and the party would be preparing that for the team.
“It is going to be our home-away from home over the next few weeks so we have to ensure our athletes are comfortable and safe so that they can perform well,” Waiwai said.
The first lot of athletes will depart Port Moresby today with the rest of the members of the general team management while other members will follow as their competition dates approach.
