HELA Wigmen head coach Charlie Wabo said the eight players from his team who made the SP Hunters train-on squad was a milestone for the Digicel Cup champions.
Earlier this month, Hunters coach Matthew Church named Wigmen’s Norman Brown, Gilmo Paul, Solo Wane, Solomon Pokari, Judah Rimbu, Samuel Yegip, Jeffery Robert and Valentine Culligan in his 37-man squad for next season in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup (ISC).
It is understood to be the Wigmen’s biggest contribution to the Hunters since the 2017 ISC champions’ inception in 2014.
Wabo said he was confident that his men would excel at the Hunters, given their successful Digicel Cup campaign this year.
“I want to congratulate my men as I am thrilled that they have made the squad,” he said.
“I am really proud of them and I congratulate them for this achievement.” Wabo said they earned their spot in the squad and was optimistic about their chances of making the final cut prior to the Hunters’ relocation to Southeast Queensland for next season.
Wabo said he was confident that his men would cope with the relocation, given their Digicel Cup pre-season trial matches away to Wynnum Manly and the North Devils in February.
“I’m confident that they can cope with the atmosphere and training and they will give their best,” Wabo said.
“The important thing now is their training, discipline, and attitude on and off the field.”
Meanwhile, he said the Wigmen would be scouting for new players to replace the eight for next year’s Digicel Cup season.
“As for the eight men joining the Hunters, I wish them all the best,” Wabo said.
“If they do not make the final cut, they are always welcome to return to the Wigmen.”

  • Well done hero Charlie Wabo.. you the man..but nothing much to be excited yet. Separation of boys and men will be done after consecutive intense fitness training. Then we will see who remains and who will be asked to return to their Digicel cup teams.
