Eighty participants from the architectural and decorative industry attended a seminar about global colour trends on Saturday.
The ‘PNG Colour Talk 2018’ was hosted by Nippon Paint and South Pacific Paint Limited in Port Moresby. Port Morresby-based South Pacific Paint Ltd is the exclusive distributor of Nippon Paint products in the South Pacific.
Nippon Paint’s headquarters is in Malaysia.
The seminar was presented by international colour marketing specialist Serene Pang, who is the Asia-Pacific sales and marketing director of The Duha Group.
The theme of the seminar was “Eastern Trend vs Western Trend”. Pang offered key insights into how Eastern colours are generally bright and chromatic while Western colours are more likely to be dark and saturated. However, she said this was not exclusive to both regions and that the main concept was how trends affected the consumers’ choice of colours in general.
Pang said that colour trends in building designs, fashion and consumer items were largely dictated by social experiences.
The participants were also placed in groups and asked to create a PNG-themed colour palette based on what they perceived as trends in this country.
South Pacific Paint Limited general manager Sam Webb said the event was a way of establishing and maintaining relationships with members of the architectural and decorative industry.
He said Nippon paint has modern systems of formatting paint.
“The mixing methods for the paint is all automated and any colour choice can be generated in about five minutes,” Webb said.
The president of the PNG Architect Institute, Jordan Tegabwasa, said the seminar was a great platform to collaborate with suppliers in the architectural industry.
“Such events add value to our profession,” Tegabwasa said.
“Being up to date with the trends worldwide is important as it helps us make our work relevant in current contexts”
Webb said the last seminar was held four years ago. It will become an annual event.
