DIGICEL ExxonMobil Cup rookie-of-the-year Manu Sent has left for Brisbane yesterday to join his new club Central Queensland Capras.
The former Goroka Lahanis bench forward received his visa and will join the Rockhampton-based club on a two-year contract.
The Kagamuga villager in Western Highlands will be playing alongside his fellow countrymen Zev John, Bob Tenza, Samuel Yegip and another new recruit Khaiya Waiembi at the Capras. Sent rose to stardom playing for the Goroka Lahanis last season. Despite losing the grand final 6-26 against Enga Mioks in his debut season, Sent was a best performer during the finale at the National Football Stadium.
He was rewarded with the call up to join tie-two Queensland Hostplus Cup straight from the country’s domestic semi-professional league, a dream for every local Papua New Guinean talent.
“We are so grateful to the Goroka Lanahis for giving Manu the first-hand opportunity to prove himself in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup competition,” family spokesperson Sam Paundi said yesterday before Sent’s departure at the Jacksons International Airport.
“It was his debut season, however he did it so well and earned the rookie-of-the-year (award) and also, playing in the grand final.
“Our gratitude and thankyou also to Central Queensland Capras for giving him this opportunity and the challenge. We also appreciate the support from the SP PNG Hunters for helping him out with fitness tests, getting the visa and other necessary papers ready on time.”
The hard-hitting forward started his rugby league career back in his province, competing in offseason rugby league tournaments. Eastern Highlands-based Lahanis noticed Sent’s ability and skills and gave him an opportunity to compete at the inter-city competition.
