A SERIAL offender has been recaptured after disappearing four months ago when he was accused of killing a woman in Western.
Daru Police Station commander Insp Soiwa Ricker said: “Wesley Wopa Uduru, 35, from Sote village in South Fly, was at large since April 13 after allegedly killing his wife’s girlfriend at Gamea Corner on Daru Island.
“Uduru was arrested at Tapila on the mainland last week after we got tipped off of his presence there.
“Uduru is a serial offender who has been charged and detained on numerous cases for assaulting and raping.
“But he always managed to escape from the Daru Police Station cells.
“This time, we will ensure that he does not escape from the cells.”
Meanwhile, Ricker said some detainees were arrested for allegedly drinking homebrew in public places were advised to go home.
“We told them to go home after they had sobered down due to the deteriorating condition of the cells,” he said.
“However, one of them, Yaukai Sambera, decided to hang around in the cells.
“We don’t know why he is still hanging around in the cells.
“Probably he is from Morehead which is far away and has no place to stay in Daru town.
“On Friday when I went to check him, he was not there.
“This morning (yesterday) when I went to check him, he was in the cell.
“So I told him to leave the cell immediately.”
Ricker said that after Sambera’s relatives posted on Facebook that he was still detained while all his co-accused had been released.
“They claimed that his friends were released without being charged after they bribed the arresting officer whereas Sambera had no money so was still kept in the cell.”
