PEOPLE’S National Congress Party (PNC) leader and Ialibu-Pangia MP Peter O’Neill says the country needs young, educated and family-oriented people to lead the nation.
“PNG needs leaders who have nothing to gain from public life but only to serve the interest of the people,” he said.
“It is only right and fair to such dedicated leaders as the future belongs to the younger generation.
“Those of us who have been around for a while will have to pass the responsibilities to the new generation.”
O’Neill, a former prime minister, told a fundraising dinner hosted by Vitus Dame at a hotel in Port Moresby last Saturday that the country was going through “very challenging times where lies and truth are mixed and confused”.
But the former PM said eventually, evidence and truth would prevail.
“I also fear that we are going down and never come out of,” he said.
“If we love our country, we must all care for our children and raise them well to become true leaders,” he said.
“We want Papua New Guineans to elect us and our party for what we have done or contributed.
“And for our proven capabilities.
“We all have family and wantoks and the temptation to support them is always there.
“But this (general election) is beyond that and it is about the future of our people and country.”
