Seven accused of attempted murder

SEVEN men, aged between 18 and 26, were charged in a committal court in Waigani with attempted murder in a drunken brawl during a soccer match last year.
Investigation officer Detective Constable Turi Kuruwa told the court that the police files were almost complete.
“Four police files have been completed and were served on the defendants. We will need a week to complete the rest of the files and serve them accordingly,” he said.
On Nov 6, between 2pm and 3pm, the seven where on the Waikele Sports field to watch and participate in a soccer game when a fight broke out that ended bloody, almost killing 18-year-old Jermaine Terep.
The seven were allegedly involved in stabbing Terep were Ali Mathew, 22, from Eastern Highlands, Okapa, Willie Sam, 18, from Madang’s Bogia, Eliot Albert from Morobe’s Buang, Starfford Panang, 26, from East Sepik’s Wewak, Bradley Eddie, 22, from Milne Bay’s Lousia, Christopher Abel from Central’s Tapinil and Robert Sonny, 26, from Morobe’s Garaina.
Police alleged that the assailants, except Sonny, were drunk when a fight broke out on the field between Panang and Terep’s friend Johnson John.
Terep quickly intervened to stop the fight when Mathew, Sam, Albert, Panang, Eddie, Abel and Sonny all charged at him and stabbed him.
According to police some of the witnesses who tried to protect Terep were also assaulted by the assailants.
Police said Terep was stabbed on his right abdomen with a kitchen knife and he was rushed to the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Mathew and Eddie are currently in Correctional Services custody while the others are out on bail.
Police files were served to Eddie, Sonny, Albert and Panang except Mathew, Abel and Sam.
Their case returns on March 27.
