A man charged with persistent sexual abuse and unlawful wounding has been remanded and his case adjourned to Jan 30, 2021.
Baim Maya, 24, from Kamlawa in Finschhafen appeared before Lae Committal Court Magistrate Jimmy Tapat last Friday.
The case was adjourned in order for police to complete their investigations to determine whether there was enough evidence to commit Maya to trial.
Police allege that between March 15, 2016, and Sept 12, 2020, at Kamlawa village, the accused engaged in an act of persistent sexual abuse of a 14-year-old.
It was alleged that on March 15, 2016, the victim left Kamlawa village, her family home, at about 6.30am and was walking to Kolem Primary School when she was threatened by Maya, who was armed with a bush knife, and forced her into the bushes.
Maya held the victim captive in the bushes before taking her to his home that night.
The victim’s father then searched for his daughter and located her at Maya’s home.
The victim’s father went to take her back home but was wounded in the arm by Maya who attacked him with a fishing gun.
Maya then held the victim as his wife for four years.
On Sept 12, Maya injured the victim’s father again using a fishing gun. Lae police attempted to arrest Maya but he fled.
The victim’s father later confronted Maya and attacked him cutting off several fingers from his left hand.
Maya then surrendered to police and was taken to Braun Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Maya told police that what he did was with the victim’s will and consent.
