UNITED States law enforcement agencies visited Papua New Guinea last week to discuss shared priorities in existing security arrangements to strengthen ties.
A spokesperson from the US embassy said representatives were from the Department of Homeland
Security’s Federal Law Enforcement Training Centres (FLETC) and Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL).
The spokesperson said: “The FLETC and INL team identified areas of cooperation and assistance with PNG partners who are on the frontlines of advancing Prime Minister Marape’s law and order agenda.
“FLETC, with funding from INL, is prepared to provide law enforcement training, in-service programming and strengthening curriculum while also considering another area of interest which is the standardisation of allowing for police to be more professional in initiatives across PNG.”
The INL prioritises security arrangements by assisting the Government of PNG to strengthen the criminal justice system through practical skills training for law enforcement officers, coast guards, environmental authorities, financial intelligence units and judicial institutions in accordance with the US Pacific Partnership Strategy.
INL focuses on improving local capacity to fight transnational crime, including human and narcotics trafficking, and advancing reforms to create a justice system that meets international standards, enhances regional stability and security and helps support the PNG Vision 2050 and the Boe Declaration (Pacific island regional security by leaders of the Pacific in 2018).
