A SUSPECT has been arrested by Madang police in relation to the killing of a 21-year-old man on Sept 16 at Tusbab Beach.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubian told The National that Joe Jeffrey was arrested on Tuesday by the Criminal Investigation Division officers on arrival in Madang from Port Moresby.
The deceased, Tony Sangin Jr, was of mixed East Sepik and Oro parentage.
Rubian said the suspect reported to police that on the day of the killing there was a break-in at his house by three men.
Jeffrey with another man chased the three men towards Tusbab Beach and two escaped while one jumped into the sea.
Rubian said Jeffrey later reported to the police that a dead body was found at Tusbab beach.
Police upon receiving the body saw that it had two bullet wounds.
“After reporting to the incident to police Jeffrey left Madang for Port Moresby,” he said.
“Police suspect that he might have killed Sangin.
“When he was arrested, he had a licensed firearm, with two rounds in his possession.”
Jeffrey remains in Madang while police investigate the death.
Meanwhile, Rubian said no arrests had been made in regards to the fight between the Kananam and Mabonob villages.
He said police were working with village leaders to resolve the conflict.
He said the fighting was over land issue and had resulted in deaths and the disruption of services as well as destruction of properties.
North Amenob councillor Sali Tagau confirmed that fighting had stopped and a peace process had started between the villages.
