Shop fined K30,000 for illegally increasing prices of items

THE Independent Consumer Competition Commission (ICCC) has found a firm illegally increasing prices of basic food items in its Goroka shop.
ICCC team leader Steven Sugul said it was in direct contravention of the state of emergency orders which warned business owners against increasing prices on food and other basic items during the Covid-19 lockdown.
The team had completed the inspection of shops in the National Capital District before moving on to Goroka town.
“In Goroka, we discovered that (named firm) has illegally increased prices on six different basic items – a fine of K5,000 per item,” he said.
“In one of our earlier inspections (at the shop), the price was inflated above 5 per cent which contravenes the emergency orders.”
The total fine will be K30,000.
The team also inspected other shops.
