THE Southern Highlands government has allocated K10 million for law and order issues in the province this year.
Governor William Powi said this during the first provincial law and order consultative meeting on Monday attended by Mendi MP Raphael Tonpi, deputy governor Rev Wane Nijipa and provincial law and order committees at the Agiru Centre in Mendi.
Powi said Southern Highlands was among three law and order provinces, and the allocation of provincial service improvement programme (fund) of K10 million for law and order programme included rural policing (K3 million), law order committee in Mendi town and surrounding areas (K2 million) and K1 million would be allocated to each district’s law and order committees.
The law and order committee and provincial government want to ensure the province change for the better.
The committee thanked Powi and the political leadership of the province.
Meanwhile, Powi is requesting Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr and Police Commissioner David Manning appoint to a new police commander as the recently appointed candidate has not taken up the position yet.
“SHP is a hotspot for law and order, and we cannot continue to operate without a permanent police commander,” Powi said.
His government allocated vehicles to support the work of policing, allocated about K1.5 million for police support and deposited K500,000 into police trust account in Port Moresby for their work in the province.
