THE burning down of the Mendi National and District Courthouse has forced the Buiebi Correctional Service in Southern Highlands to transfer 59 prisoners to Baisu in Western Highlands.
Buiebi CS Commander Inspector Bob Omba confirmed the prisoners were transferred on Friday.
“Only 16 remain,” he said.
“Prisoners complained that they do not like to be at Baisu and want to remain but we had no choice, they were transferred.
“So if relatives of the prisoners want to visit them, they have to go to Baisu.”
Omba said he understands that it will be an expensive exercise for the relatives to visit the inmates at Baisu but they had to follow orders from the department to transfer them.
He said Hela must now send its remandees to Baisu as they would not be accepting any prisoners there.
“Everyone will be one way or the other affected, and we are now beginning feel the effect of destroying vital government services.
