Sinai warns public to be wary of money and gifts exchange

ELECTORAL Commissioner Simon Sinai has warned people to be wary of individuals claiming to represent his office to solicit money and gifts in exchange for favours.
Sinai said with the high number of election petition cases before the National Court, some people were approaching losing General Election 2022 candidates, claiming they represented the commission.
“Impersonation and pretending to be staff or an officer of an organisation is a crime that can cause a lot more harm to innocent people when the person concerned is not aware of what others are doing using his or her name to solicit money and goods,” Sinai said in a statement.
Sinai was told that certain individuals had approached losing candidates from the Highlands region pretending to be employees and using the office of the EC to solicit money.
“I am calling on the public, particularly MPs and petitioners, to be on the alert and keep an eye out for such unscrupulous people and refer them to the appropriate authorities so they can be dealt with appropriately,” he said.
“You may also come to the Electoral Commission office headquarters in Hohola and report them.”
Sinai was also concerned about fake letters being circulated on social media during the 2022 General Election counting period purportedly from his office.
Sinai warned that the production of such letters in court would be useless as they were not authentic.
