WOMEN’S National Soccer League (WNSL) interim committee deputy chairman Deslyn Siniu says this year’s theme for the International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women in all walks of life.
The former national team captain said for sports, one of the goals of the event was to celebrate women athletes and encourage them to take up leadership roles in sports and life in general.
“In Papua New Guinea, women’s football has grown over the years and with the 2020-21 WNSL season, we have seen an increase in participation,” Siniu said.
“The impact of Covid-19 has been a challenge.
“Though under-represented, women are still leading and inspiring in their respective professions or at home during the pandemic.
“Taking the responsibility as a captain and now being part of the WNSL interim committee comes with responsibilities.
“We’re committed to ensuring equality and inclusion, and providing leadership in supporting our women and girls.
“The committee consists of professional women who are leaders in their respective professions.
“They’re committed to and passionate about football, guidance and mentorship which empower women and I am grateful to them.”
Siniu said the WNSL created a platform that empowered women and girls to participate and showcase their talents and skills.
