MADANG MP Sir Arnold Amet remains adamant he is the legitimate attorney-general.
Sir Arnold made the statement while handing over a computer to the North Coast Road Highway Patrol unit at Dylup Plantationin Madang on Monday.
In giving the gift as a token of appreciation for the unpaid efforts of 12 voluntary auxiliary members working throughout the Christmas and New Year period, he described the men as “success stories”.
“These are men who are success stories and we have to acknowledge the good work done by them,” Sir Arnold said.
Highway Patrol commander Adam Yawing said the major notable achievement by his men was seeing a drastic reduction in law and order problems in the Sumkar area, which covers Sumgilbar and Karkar Island.
In supporting Senior Constable Yawing’s comment, Sumgilbar local level government (LLG) Ward 8 councillor, Thomas Sarang Mal said  since Yawing’s arrival as highway patrol commander he had shown great respect for the no-nonsense approach in dealing with social issues.
Yawing appealed to the provincial and national authorities to fund the auxiliary police concept as he claimed that arrests were made easier by an individual’s personal knowledge of the village.
He made special mention of the help given by district administrator Lawrence Pitor for donating two of the district vehicles during the Christmas and New Year operations with fuel and lighting given by Sumkar district for conducting the roadblocks.
Yawing intends to boost the strength of the 16-man unit, four of whom are regular policemen.
