Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae commemorated Remembrance Day in Wewak yesterday.
He visited Wom War Memorial Park and the Japanese War Memorial at Mission Hill.
“War remains in parts of this province remind us of a time in history when the war, which was not Papua New Guinea’s war, was brought to our shores and fought on our land,” Sir Bob said.
He said the exact number of villagers and soldiers from different countries who lost their lives would never be known.
“Nevertheless, we have and will continue to honour and remember them,” Sir Bob said.
“Let us teach our children, and let us keep their memories alive.
“We must celebrate our history, as we proudly take our place among the rest of the world.
“Nations are built on hardships, struggles and endurance.
“It is a long road with endless challenges, but with courage, bravery, obedience and selflessness, no barrier is an obstacle.”
Sir Bob said the foundations and building blocks of villages and communities had broken down, with discipline problems rampant. “This is not the kind of society and community our heroes fought for,” he said.
“They fought for a society that is disciplined and well ordered: Where families are protected, leaders are respected, women and girls are cared for, youths are well behaved and where children groomed to become better citizens.
“Let us remember the fine example set by those we remember today.
“May we aspire to reach the limits of virtue like they did.”
