CHIEF Justice Sir Gibbs Salika says the lack of funding is causing the delay in the construction work of the K16 million court building at Kreer Heights in Wewak.
“Construction work has been very slow because the money is not coming in quickly,” he said.
“We can only hope that funds can be made available quickly and the contractors will complete it.”
The ground-breaking ceremony was done in May 2017.
It is described as one of the most modern court facilities in the country to house the national and district court.
It is expected to have two national court rooms, judges’ chambers, staff offices and court registry.
The district court will be located in the same complex and is expected to have three district court rooms, magistrate’s chambers and registry.
Sir Gibbs said there were also plans to build new court houses around the country.
“We’ve got plans for other court houses to be built, judges’ houses, registry and staff houses,” he said.
“We’ve got plans for Hela for instance.
“The construction work is happening in relation to judge’s house and staff house.
“One good thing about them is that the provincial government had put in the money.
“That is like a partnership already by the provincial government with the judiciary.
“We would appreciate such arrangement.”
