NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan says China has maintained a strong relationship with his province to build infrastructure and businesses over the years.
Speaking at the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations at the Chinese Embassy in Port Moresby on Tuesday, he said his government would continue building on their close relationship to develop the province.
“China has risen from its backyard to become a game-changer and world superpower,” he said.
“In the New Guinea Islands in New Ireland where I come from, early Chinese merchants successfully ran business in our towns and they still do to this day.
“My government has close working relations with Chinese businessmen and contractors as well.
“We have some very good road builders and contractors who have helped to transform my townships and province in the infrastructure industry.
“I don’t worry too much about who owns the business or contractors, as long as the job gets done.”
Sir Julius said that his familiar connection and personal experience were reasons for his close connection with the country.
