NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan says New Irelanders should remain calm and pray to allow politicians decide the outcome of the current political pandemonium.
Sir Julius said New Ireland had clear political agendas of achieving the highest form of autonomy, gaining formula for maximum benefits from its natural resources and changing the mining, oil and gas laws to return ownership to landowning groups.
“These are the pillars for major structural reforms that Papua New Guinea needs to recover from, the deep economic woes we are encountering right now,” he said.
“The country is filthy rich in natural resources, oil and gas but we are struggling with heavy debt burdens we cannot live with. We need to be honest with ourselves that we have made bad mistakes that have landed us in deep murk and take bold decisions to recover.
“This is what Prime Minister Peter O’Neill requested me to do and my team of government advisers on autonomy and mining, have been in Port Moresby over the last week and a half taking the lead in drafting legislation on autonomy and restructuring the mining regime to get Papua New Guinea back on track as a booming mining economy.
“My priority is to advance New Ireland to achieve full autonomous status and prosperity for our people from our God-given resources. Provinces are blessed with abundance of natural resources but legislations have crippled rightful benefits to our people and made them poor spectators. This is not the destiny we envisaged at self-government and independence.
“We all have duty to do and I must deliver what I promised to the people of New Ireland first,”
