Sir John: No procession in capital city

THE Good Friday “Way of the Cross” procession will not take place in Port Moresby due to increase of the Covid-19, according to Archbishop of Port Moresby Cardinal Sir John Ribat.
In a circular for the Holy Week and Easter celebrations to Catholics, Sir John said the number of the Covid-19 cases continues to rise in the country, especially in the National Capital District and everyone must adhere to the national pandemic controller to stop the spread of the virus.
Instead of the procession, which usually covers the main city routes, Sir John said stations of the cross could be held at the parish level.
He said the liturgical celebration that begins with Palm Sunday (March 28), and the Easter tridum would be celebrated as usual.
He said there would be limited number of people, 50 or less and the priests can celebrate two or more masses to give opportunity to the for participation.
Others included:

  • WE have to wear face mask and use hand sanitiser before entering the church and let us maintain self-distancing of 1.5 meters;
  • RECEIVING Holy Communion by the hands;
  • EUCHARIST minister wash and sanitise their hands before and after distributing Holy Communion;
  • AT the time of peace do not shake hands, instead, bow or wave to each other and avoid physical contact; and
  • ON Good Friday, at the veneration of the cross, avoid kissing the and touching the crucifix, slightly bow or genuflect;
  • AT Easter , not more than 10 people are allowed to receive the sacrament of baptism.

Sir John said everyone must adhere to the protocols put in place for our good and well wellbeing.
In his Easter message, he said the pandemic wasa reminder that we are responsible for the welfare and common good of all.
“We have to work towards a common goal of happiness and peace that Christ promised to a world shattered by fear, greed, arrogant and pride,etc. that divided the world,” he said.
