The Kumul submarine cable network (KSCN) arrived in Kavieng, New Ireland last Friday, according to PNG DataCo Ltd.
New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan visited the landing site while the PNG DataCo team and its partners were installing the cables.
Sir Julius hoped the project would deliver the expected outcomes especially by providing information to the people.
“Technology has its advantages and disadvantages,” he said.
“But as is enshrined in our Constitution, our people have the right to information because knowledge is power and with information readily available, our people can make better and informed decisions thus contributing to the development of the province.”
Sir Julius said the new technology would definitely be useful to students doing research subjects, allowing them to think more broadly.
“Knowledge is a commodity to be shared,” he said.
“Investing in it brings about more returns.
“It should not remain the monopoly of a select few.”
School teacher Daniel Lavasut welcomed the upgrade in technology which would improve internet access in remote areas of the province, allowing access to school and government data at low costs.
PNG DataCo general manager engineering services Tony Morisause said they would ensure that people fully benefited.
