NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan has described the knighthood bestowed by the Queen on deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion as “another jewel in your crown of honours”.
The East New Britain regional MP, now Sir Leo Dion, was awarded the Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) on the Queen’s Birthday.
Sir Leo was honoured for services to the nation and the East New Britain community in the roles of provincial governor and deputy prime minister.
The award was also in recognition for his distinguished service with the Papua New Guinea police.
“I know that your devotion to your duty and to the people of East New Britain and Papua New Guinea have always been your highest priorities. And that has again been recognised. But you may feel justly proud too,” Sir Julius said. “It is through the efforts and selfless regard for the national interest of people such as yourself that the younger generations of PNG have fine examples to follow. And to follow they must if we are to meet the challenges of the next decade and beyond.”
