NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan has called on Papua New Guineans to honour the National Remembrance Day on Monday for the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare whose name “will live on”.
In a tribute to mark the third anniversary of the Sir Michael’s death on Feb 26, 2021, he urged all to emulate the dedication all founding fathers had for the country.
“We joined hands together with one dream, one vision, one mind to form a united Papua New Guinea.
“Unity is what Sir Michael and all of us stood for at a tumultuous time,” Sir Julius said.
“He was the captain and we all worked together for the good of the country.
“That is how history will always remember us.”
Sir Michael said today more than ever, the people of PNG must unite with the same aspirations of nationhood to build a better country not only for themselves but also for future generations.
He recalled his long friendship with the country’s founding father, saying Sir Michael’s role in “bringing the country’s Independence dream to reality, remains etched in the hearts and minds of all Papua New Guineans. “His name will live on,” he said.
“When we depart this world, we must leave behind a better PNG than when we inherited it.
“The journey travelled thus far has not been an easy one.
“Step by step, we are finding our place in the world.
“We have crossed many hurdles along the way, we have overcome and continue to rise up from the depths of despair.
“Let us strengthen our resolve to become a better society, better for our family, our community, our provinces and our nation.”
