NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan says the provincial government will look at providing a market for cocoa farmers in the province.
He said this during the launching of the 12,000-cocoa plant nursery in DJaul Island, Kavieng, on Tuesday.
“Through the district primary industries branch, we will make sure that those of you growing cocoa will have a place to sell and get a good price for it,” Sir Julius said.
“We will look at transportation and the price of cocoa and a subsidy.”
The nursery is at the Piliwa village where 82 farmers have shown interest in cocoa farming.
“We have built roads for the mainland and we must bridge the ocean so we can give equal opportunity to the people,” he said.
“We are not a government of only those people that voted us in.”
Community leader August Bartsaka said the 82 farmers would receive 300 cocoa plants each.
Bartsaka said it had been his dream to get the cocoa project up and running on the Island. He said it took time and resources to make this happen.

  • Well over due.Paradise foods has a a very capable CEO, Mr J Rice.He is a visionary man driving the company forward .His attempt in aligning his company to the PNG farmers is the best thing that ever happened to this agriculture sector.

Meanwhile you Politicians have failed the little people Cocoa had been around since day one.The economic policy to tie this sector to the market is and was your duty of care towards the citizens of this country.

  • why you all so against him? he has done so much for his province. if you all want to make changes why dont you run for elections and make a change. the Boluminski hiway is the best hiway in PNG, the elderly benefit from the old pension scheme, school fees are subsidised, what more do you want? all other members for NIPs have done nothing compared to Sir J. if the old man can deliver why cant the?

not all politicians are saints so dont judge anyone.

  • It is the prerogative of the mandated leaders to deliver much needed services to their people in their respective provinces’ and or electorates, either they deliver on time or in due course within their mandated time frame. Sir JC is a veteran politician who has done a lot for this country (PNG), may not be in his Province [NIP].
