THE Department of Personnel Management is aware that many ghost names continue to be on government payroll consuming a lot of money, Public Service Minister Sir Puka Temu said yesterday.

He told Parliament during question time that many of the ghost names and others like double or triple names

on one payroll must be corrected.

He said many abnormalities existed within the public service payroll system and needed to be corrected so as not to affect service delivery through an overblown budget.

He said this might be corrected if the payroll functions were transferred to his department from Finance where it was vested presently.

“I want the payroll system to be immediately transferred to the Department of Personnel Management so things are coordinated well,” he said.

Sir Puka also said many aging public servants were still waiting to be retrenched.

He said there was a need to identify them and gradually retrench them by paying out their dues.
