ORGANISERS of the Digicel Cup have increased the crowd capacity for Port Moresby’s Sir John Guise Stadium and the Lae Rugby League Ground by 1,000 and 300 respectively.
Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) manager Stanley Hondina said yesterday that Sir John Guise Stadium would be allowed 4,500 spectators each on Saturday and Sunday.
He said Lae Rugby League Ground would be allowed 1,600 spectators for Sunday’s double-header.
“We’ve reviewed the crowd attendance for last week and their compliance to protocols at the two venues,” Hondina said.
“We are satisfied to increase the ticket numbers a bit.
“We had a good crowd at Sir John Guise Stadium.
“Almost 75 per cent of the 3,500 tickets for each of the two game days were sold.
“In Lae, the 1,300 tickets were sold out.
“A good number of spectators missed out and were asked to watch the match on TV Wan.
“It was challenging but we were able to kick off the competition with effective crowd control.
“I thank everyone involved: the event management, sponsors and other stakeholders.”
Hondina said there was a minor issue with spectators lining up to purchase tickets outside Sir John Guise Stadium on game day.
He said PNGNRLC had arranged for the pre-selling of tickets at Digicel stores, including the Gordon head office and Vision City outlet, in Port Moresby.
