Skip Sepik River districts in LLG polls

Letters

FLOODING in the three river districts of East Sepik has resulted in a tragic loss of lives and poor living conditions.
Amid all this, the Government is telling us that the LLG elections will go ahead as scheduled in June.
In the Sepik districts, human lives, livestock, food crops and cash crops have been badly affected.
Because of climate change, we are experiencing high rainfall and flooding, king tides, earthquakes, and contaminated water inviting waterborne diseases.
Yet, the Government and its agents are hell-bent on conducting the local level government elections two months from now.
Before changes in climate popped their heads in, the Sepik River people would have six months of wet season and the next six months would be all dry. People know exactly when to start planting food crops, cash crops and replace whatever was destroyed during the floods.
This is not possible today. Climate change has brought with it uncontrollable weather.
It will take months or even years to fully recover from this madness.
The LLG elections can go ahead, but the Government must consider that the Sepik River people, ward councillors and their LLGs were badly affected by recent disaster.
Perhaps, it might consider another arrangement for the districts and LLGs affected by the recent natural disasters.
East Sepik’s river districts of Angoram, Wosera-Gawi and Ambunti Dreikikier will no fully recover within the next few months. At least a year or two will be needed.
For now, skip the river districts of East Sepik.
