A DRIVER who fell asleep at the wheels because he was drunk, according to police, and crashed into another vehicle has been ordered to pay a K2,000 fine within seven days.
Magistrate Seth Tanei penalised 55-year-old Ivan Kerry Mahero, of Kasu village in Bulolo, Morobe, for driving without due care and attention yesterday in the Waigani Traffic Court.
The accident occurred along the junction leading out of the 9-Mile Plaza supermarket in Port Moresby last Nov 29.
Mahero pleaded guilty to the offence and asked the court for leniency.
Police Prosecutor Sgt Emmanuel Bigam said the offence was common in the city.
The matter returns next Wednesday for review of the orders.
