LAW and order problems are getting out of control in the Ambunti-Dreikikir area of East Sepik, a community leader says.
Edward Wiruk, a community leader from Waiawos village near the Ambunti government station, called on provincial and district authorities, including police, to take urgent measures to restore peace and harmony in the community.
“Law and order problems are associated with drugs (marijuana) and homebrew,” he said.
“I am more concerned of what the future is going to be like.”
Wiruk added that the district did not have a proper police presence to maintain law and order.
He said due to the government’s failure to provide proper police enforcement, the villagers had initiated their own plan to maintain law and order in the area.
He said they would employ two reservist policemen and pay them with funds allocated for their ward development programme.
“We are sick and tired of waiting for the
government to provide basic services, and, therefore, we want to help ourselves so that we can have a safe and peaceful community in the future,” Wiruk said.
