Society breaking down: Bishop

REGULAR news of rape, incest and sexual assault of minors in the country are a sign of a society breaking down, Evangelical Lutheran Church of PNG (ELCPNG) head bishop Rev Dr Jack Urame says.
“Why do we read about rape, incest and other forms of sexual violence frequently in our daily newspapers or hear about it often?
“Why are more and more minors becoming victims of this form of violence?
“This is a sign of a society breaking down,” Urame said.
“Rape is beyond our biblical and cultural norms and values of respect, love and care for children who need protection.
“In our society today, children are no longer safe on the streets, in the communities and even within their own homes.
“They are no longer safe from their uncles, relatives and care givers.
“There is so much suspicion and fear when we think about our children, especially girls.”
Urame said what was seen and heard in society indicated a serious moral dilemma.
He said it was unthinkable for adults to use minors for their own sexual gratification.
“Children are not sexual toys to be used whenever one wants to. They are products of human love and wonder of God’s creation and they have the same human dignity and value as adults.
“Children should feel secure within their families.”
Urame said churches needed to be engaged in doing more awareness on child protection to help families and others.
