THE soldier stabbed during a fight with civilians at Hohola in Port Moresby on Saturday night died later at a hospital operating theatre, according to chief of staff Captain (navy) Philip Polewara.
He said Private Newton Kuri was with three colleagues from the Force Support Battalion when the fight started with bystanders over a traffic incident.
“During the incident, the bystanders assaulted two soldiers. One of them (Kuri) was stabbed with a knife on his back,” he said.
He later died in hospital.
He said soldiers later retaliated by burning all the tuckerboxes at the scene of the incident,” he said.
Polewara said attempts by soldiers to contain the situation were impossible because of the involvement of opportunists.
“The military police has commenced its investigation into the incident.
“It has also taken into custody the two soldiers implicated. The fourth soldier is in a stable condition in hospital,” he said.
He said it was now a police matter as civilians were involved.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou said they wanted to identify the civilians involved.
“I am appealing to the public to come forward with any information relating to the incident,” he said.
